France marks 25 years since landmark slavery law

Thursday marks the 25th anniversary of France’s Taubira law, which recongnised slavery as a crime against humanity for the first time. Now, MPs are moving to extend the provisions by also repealing the “black code”: laws which remained in place even after the abolition of slavery in the 19th century.
