South Africa: Refugees affected by xenophobic attacks forced to sleep outside police station

By France 24 Eng|June 11, 2026|2 min read

Xenophobic violence and displacement are escalating across South Africa as tensions over foreign nationals boil over. In Mossel Bay, two Mozambicans were killed and dozens of homes torched in informal settlements, in attacks residents have linked to ethnic targeting – leaving hundreds displaced and entire areas in ruins. Outside Durban’s Department of Home Affairs, dozens of Congolese nationals remain after similar xenophobic protests forced them from their homes.
